1998 - Latin America in Short Films
The IX Festival houses the annual International Conference of Short Films, an organization created in 1970 which supports the global union of the short film community. The event demonstrates the growing importance of Latin America as a fertile ground for the genre to develop, and pays homage to the continent with a special program offering films by the Argentine Fernando Birri, the Bolivian Jorge Sanjínes, and others.
A Brazilian Retrospective pays tribute to Brazilian comedies in short films, displaying works from the 1913 "Grandpa's Glasses" to current films. Humor also fills the special programs such as the showcase about the distribution companies KurzFilmAgentur (Germany), and Corto (Italy), as well as the American cycles on Jay Rosenblatt and Donald Richie, and the Georgian Mikhail Kobakhidzé. The Brazilian Panorama presents 65 films, including those by Philippe Barcinski, Marcus Vilar, Hílton Lacerda, Fernando Coster, Débora Waldman, Rafael Conde, and Amílcar Monteiro Claro. Among international participants are Carlos Salces (Mexico), David Birdsell (USA), Andrew Wilde (Scotland), and Mads Tobias Olsen (Denmark).
